What to bring with you:

There are hundreds of things you can do to make your room comfortable and uniquely personal without incurring costs due to damage! Let creativity flow; the material need not be expensive. Coordinating with your roommate(s) is also a plus. Here are some suggestions of things, which may be helpful to bring (and not to bring!) with you:

  • Linens, blankets, bedspreads, and pillows
  • Clothing, toiletries and towels
  • Hair dryer and or curling iron
  • Alarm clock with battery back up
  • Adequate supplies of prescription drugs (in their original containers)
  • School supplies, bedside lamp, trash can
  • Shower caddy, laundry basket
  • Telephone (answering service provided by SC)
  • Quarters for laundry, stamps for letters
  • Electric fan for warmer months
  • Friends’ and families’ phone numbers, addresses, and e-mail addresses
  • Flashlight, emergency sewing kit
  • A moving dolly (no elevators)
  • Surge protectors/ power strips to plug in approved appliances and computers
  • Posters, pictures of friends, and other decorations for your room and door
  • Small refrigerator
  • Computer with surge protector
  • TV, DVD, and VCR
  • Stereo and CD’s
  • Drapes on spring rods, storage crates, drawer
  • Throw pillows, area rugs, carpet (do not cut until after you arrive and know your exact room measurements)
  • Plants
  • Small couch, futon, or chair

 

THINGS NOT TO BRING

  • Weapons of any kind (strictly prohibited in residence halls)
  • Vulgar or profane literature, videos, or posters (also NOT permitted on campus)
  • Alcohol, tobacco products or empty alcohol containers (NOT permitted on campus)
  • Fireworks
  • Illegally obtained materials
  • Microwaves (wiring cannot handle them)
  • Candles, incense, and any appliance with an open heating element (breaks fire safety codes)
  • Halogen lamps without approved safety covers (fire hazard)
  • Electric space heaters (fire hazard)
  • Pets (fish, though, are fine)
  • Large amounts of cash
  • Irreplaceable valuables such as family heirlooms

ALSO: Drilling holes or using nails in the walls is NOT permitted because of damage (you will be charged)

Where can I purchase my textbooks?
The campus bookstore, located on the east edge of the Student Union, is owned and operated by Sterling College. The bookstore is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., while classes are in session. Special hours apply for special events, such as Homecoming, Family Day and Commencement. Students may purchase textbooks, school supplies, greeting cards, art supplies, literary classics, reference books, Christian books, gifts & CD’s, bibles and Sterling College emblematic merchandise, such as sweatshirts, mugs, stickers, postcards, etc. Personal checks, VISA, MasterCard, and Discover are accepted. Students receive a 5% discount on all merchandise (including textbooks) when a cash payment is made at time of purchase (including checks, gift certificates, traveler’s checks and money orders.) The Sterling College Bookstore may also be accessed on-line at http://www.sterlingcollegebookstore.com/.

Where can I aquire a student I.D. card?
New students will be issued their first ID card free of charge. Issued to full-time students by the Student Life Office, I.D. photos are taken during registration. Your ID card is used as your meal card and library card. Your ID card will be scanned in the cafeteria so you must bring it for every meal. Please keep your card from one semester to the next. It will be valid until you either graduate or leave. I.D. replacement cost is $15.00 (if you pay with cash) or $20 (if you charge it on your Business Account) for lost or stolen I.D’s.

Vehicle parking and registration?
Students are welcome to have automobiles on campus. All vehicles are required to be registered with the Student Life Office and are subject to campus traffic regulations. The College reserves the right to ticket vehicles parked or driving in violation of traffic regulations. Parking within marked spaces is required, as is observing all lot restrictions and designated parking spaces posted around campus and described in the Student Handbook. The speed limit on campus is 10 miles per hour. Parking violations in designated handicapped parking, fire lanes, and on public streets around the campus may be enforced by the Sterling Police
